A spirit house comes from the believe of Brahminism and Bhuddism. Thai Bhudists believe that if he sets up a spirit house at the northeast of his house, person who lives in the house shall have a properity forever.

Thai people believe that, every home or business will have a spirit that inhabits it, and the best way to keep the spirits happy is to provide them with their own beautiful home. This will keep the spirits from any wrong doing.

The beliefs of Thai people that spirits exist are so strong, that every Thai home or business will have a Spirit House (San phra phum) for the guardian spirits to live. Daily offerings of food and drink, incense, flowers or candles are made to the spirits. These offerings are made to the spirits for their blessing, and to bring good luck, happiness and security for all who live in the home, or work within the business. The Spirit Houses are given a predominant position outside of the property, but far enough away from the home or business to keep the spirits away. (Never place the Spirit House on the Floor or Ground this is considered bad luck)

The house begins with a "stem family" after one of the children gets married. It's a Thai custom for married men to live with wife's family as it is believed that this will cause the least conflict between the two families. A traditional Thai house is raised above the ground to a just above head height. The varying levels of the different sections of the house are determined by the different functions and create a flow of space which is almost modern in feel. It can be used to store agricultural implements and provides space for activities such as play ground and working area. However, many people regard the keeping of animals underneath the house as unhealthy because it makes the area dirty and foul-smelling.
